JV chap7 was really hard... Too hard for me!
As for JV chap6, I didn't understand most of it. I know chap7 was a hard chapter, but even the non-mathematic part, the text was really hard to understand for me. Trying to do the exercices was really hard and even for chap6 I could do a lot before the class where I asked for help to Mike. Even with this help, I am not sure I could do it again, because the exercices are never the same and I think I don't manage to think in the mathematical way...
Is there a trick? Something to help me think the math (stats) way ?
Still trying hardly to understand maths... :-s

unfortunately, there really aren't too many tricks. in my experience, most of learning stats is through going over it and over it repeatedly until you get used to the terms and the general concepts. actually doing the analyses is -- in my opinion -- the best way of figuring it out. that's why, when i'm reading JV and getting ready for class, i do so while sitting at my computer, with R up and running, and i go through and execute almost every command he does in his examples. it really does help. i tend, though, to gloss over the proofs and formal mathematical definitions. i don't find them terribly helpful. i suppose they help for some people, but for the most part i think they're really there just for the sake of completeness.
these are hard concepts. give yourself time. you're 'getting' it more than you probably realize.
